"What Do Adam and Eve Look Like after the Fall?: Appearance in Paradise Lost"

What Do Adam and Eve Look Like after the Fall?: Appearance in Paradise Lost

Stephen Dobranski’s job in this article is to show what happens to Adam and Eve after the Fall as shown in Milton’s poem. Dobranski starts this article by first addressing Satan and how his appearance changes once he becomes a fallen angel. Dobranski then uses Milton’s own words to prove his point. Milton had written that bodies and souls are the same. Meaning that with the decline of the first couple’s soul, their bodies will decline as well. Dobranski then uses the poem to prove just how Milton shows the decline of the couple’s body inside and out. Before the Fall, there is repetition of comparing the couple to the garden, but after there is no comparison. Eve is even described as “deflow’red,” showing that she is least like a flower after the Fall. Dobranski points out that the couple is disheveled after their sin, but their bodies also show forgiveness and remorse for disobeying God. However, the couple have lost Eden and are now changed inside and out.
